A moderately dry to moderately fresh soil moisture is also gratefully accepted. On the other hand, Rosa canina will not feel comfortable on particularly wet soil.
Provenance
With the exception of Finland and Iceland, the hardy dog rose occurs throughout Europe. Rosa canina has worked its way east to the Volga. Isolated stocks can be found in North Africa and the Middle East. In northern America it settled as a neophyte due to anthropogenic activity.
Uses
In the past, the common dog rose was used to fight rabies. Today, this pioneering plant is more likely to be planted on roadsides and in sparse forests. In addition to its use as a bird protection hedge, the possible use on beach ridges should not go entirely unmentioned.
